Songs Of Blood and Sword launch In London

The launch of Fatima Bhutto’s book Songs of Blood and Sword: A Daughter’s memoir, about the murder of her grandfather, father and two aunts, including that of Benazir in 2007, took place at the Langham last night. Guests included Bob Geldof, Count and Countess Leopold von Bismarck and Condé Nast MD Nicholas Coleridge.

Fatima said: “This book is about how power corrupts. It is about Benazir the politician, not the celebrity. When she was in power, she ordered a clean-up in Karachi, where she basically ordered the police to clean up the streets by killing with impunity. I’m trying to explain a culture where political violence is accepted and we are expected to stay silent.”

Host Henry Porter added that the one word not in the book was “courage” — something Fatima had shown “remarkable amounts of”.

Writer Alain de Botton agreed with other admirers that Fatima was “extremely hot”. “I met her at a dinner party at Jemima Khan’s.”
